2017 will see Positive Steps attempt to raise £10,000 for the Oldham Young Carers service - recent winners of a “Pride in Oldham” award.

There will be a plethora of fund-raising events over the course of the next 6 months culminating in July when 9 members of Positive Steps staff will run the “Race to the Stones”, a gruelling 2-day ultra-marathon covering 100km along the Ridgeway, one of the oldest paths in Britain. 5 more will be walking the route.

The runners and walkers will kick-off the 6-month period of fund-raising on the 17th February with a 9-mile run & walk from the Positive Steps offices in Ashton & Rochdale to the head office on Union Street, Oldham.

Other events will include:

• March - A gala curry night at The Blue Tiffin
• April - Virtual “Climb Everest” challenge
• May - A fashion show
• Sale of homemade arts and crafts
• A charity football tournament
• “Call My Bluff” wine-tasting evening

With a target of £10,000, Positive Steps hopes to purchase a range of equipment for the Young Carers and fund excursions out.

Chief Executive Steph Bolshaw said:

“The staff at Positive Steps are all passionate supporters of the Young Carers Programme and that is why we have committed to raise £10,000 to purchase a range of new equipment for them to use in their weekly sessions. While there are only 14 colleagues undertaking the ‘Race to the Stones’ in July, staff across the board will be involved in helping us meet our fund-raising target over the next 6 months and enhancing the lives of these remarkable young people.”

Oldham Young Carers Programme Manager, Martin Sutton said:

“We have currently identified 406 young carers in Oldham. We provide direct provision to 50+ young people per week. Group work and 1-to-1 sessions are carried out, plus we participate in projects and activities which aim to educate and inspire young people. Previous activities have included; healthy cooking courses, craft activities, theatre trips, roller skating, indoor skiing and residentials. These activities have all been funded by donations and have improved the well-being of the young carers enabling the young people to learn new skills, make new friends and allow opportunities to go out of the local area, something some of the young carers would not get the chance to engage in without support from the programme.”

Local estate agency, Lang-Whiston Estates Ltd (www.lang-whistonestates.co.uk) have already signed up to sponsor the runners and walkers and are providing the running tops the 14 Positive Steps members of staff will be wearing over the course of the 2-day event.

Managing Director of Lang-Whiston Estates Ltd, Victoria Lang-Whiston said:

“The whole team at Lang-Whiston Estates are proud to be supporting such a worthwhile cause. The Young Carers Project run by Positive Steps really makes a difference, not just to the lives of the Young Carers themselves, but to their whole families.”

The Oldham Young Carers Programme has been run by Positive Steps for 8 years and aims to recognise and support children (aged 8-18) with caring responsibilities by offering group social activities, information and more tailored individual support where needed. The project aims to raise public awareness about the particular needs of young people with caring responsibilities. The programme recently won the Professional Services category at the 2016 ‘Pride In Oldham’ awards and was a finalist in the ‘Reader’s Choice’ category.
