Work Experience

Bridging the gap between education and the world of work, work experience placements ensure that young people feel better prepared when they enter the labour market as well as raising their aspirations and promoting a sense of positive well-being; however, schools & colleges can find it challenging to find large numbers of placements for their students each year – this is where we can help!

 

Our Work Experience Team has been supporting the local community for over 15 years providing high quality and impactful work experience placements in Oldham, Tameside and Rochdale and more recently across Greater Manchester including Bury, Manchester and Stockport. With schools having a statutory obligation, under Gatsby benchmarks, to ensure students engage in employer encounters, quality work experience placements have never been more important. We work hard to secure placements that are a result of partnership work between Positive Steps, local employers, schools/colleges and young people to ensure that the young person’s experience of work is motivating & meaningful.

 

With a database of over 3000 employers, Positive Steps has placed thousands of young people in high quality placements with this forecast to grow even further this academic year. Positive Steps will also ensure all employers are vetted in terms of Health & Safety in the workplace.

For employers, work experience is about giving back to society and helping the future economy by doing your bit to help preparing young people for the world of work, the importance of which cannot be underestimated. The impact a positive placement can have on a young person is remarkable.  It can help them decide which career path to take, help build confidence and raise aspirations.

 

Employers can take a great sense of satisfaction in recognising the impact that they can have on young people whilst schools and colleges are able to use work experience to inspire and motivate their students to achieve more.

 

There are benefits to the business too.  Supporting a work experience student can give existing staff experience of mentoring and supervising others; it can also develop your company’s reputation for nurturing young talent, giving you a fresh perspective on what young people in Greater Manchester have to offer.

The Work Experience Team also offer a range of other services listed below:

  • Work Experience Preparation: Positive Steps and employers provide an introduction to students about work experience, what to expect, what should be expected from them, how to make the most of the opportunity. This will be delivered in whole school assemblies.
  • Mock interviews with employers: A morning or afternoon session in school which provides the opportunities for up to 150 students to practice interview techniques with employers. This will also allow the opportunity for students to ask questions of the employment opportunities within the employers field of work
  • Employer Speed Dating: (event in school, involving at least 10 employers from different sectors, with groups of 10 students spending up to 20 minutes  with chosen employers  to get to know who they are, what they do, the kinds of jobs they have, the skills, qualifications needed and the rewards.
  • Employment Sector Visits; Groups of up to 10 students will visit an employer within an employment sector of their choice. This will provide an opportunity to understand more about careers within that sector and experience the work place environment. Each visit would last half a day and students will be taken and returned by Positive Steps Employees

 

POSITIVE FUTURES:

An enhanced supportive work experience offer (Year 10 upwards) across all employment sectors which allows students to attend work experience 1, 2, 3, 4 days per week whilst maintaining their mainstream education. The enhanced offer includes:

  • Individual mentoring support in the work place
  • Attendance monitoring
  • Assessment of client needs
  • Pre placement preparation
  • Health & Safety and risk assessment vetting service

If students aren’t quite ready for the workplace then we can offer access to pre placement opportunities that currently includes, PS Cycles, Pre Gym fitness and the upcoming Handyman in 8 week blocks where we seek to progress into the work place when ready

ASPIRATIONAL VISITS (HALF or FULL DAY)

Many young people are unsure or unaware of the career pathways or progression options available, which can often reduce their aspiration level and lead them to settling for less or choosing the wrong option, only to regret this at a later date.

An aspirational visit can include talks from industry professionals and cover education, employment and training opportunities, including visits to employers, education institutions and local cultural landmarks. Young people are encouraged to ask questions throughout and record their findings in their personalised visit log books

Students will help plan travel arrangements into Manchester City Centre, identify opportunities in terms of free travel in the city centre and will have the opportunity to share lunch together
